Deployment, Storage, and Data Locations in Generate Enterprise

Generate Enterprise is an administrator-controlled platform that indexes your organization’s documents from storage systems you connect, so data stays within your environment. Administrators connect storage locations such as Amazon S3, MinIO, NAS, NFS, and SMB-CIFS, run indexing jobs against them, and configure backups. Rather than requiring documents to be copied into a separate silo, Generate scans and indexes content in the storage you point it at.

Where does Generate Enterprise store organization data?

Generate indexes documents from storage locations that administrators connect, and those documents remain in your organization’s storage systems. Supported storage types are Amazon S3, MinIO, NAS, NFS, and SMB-CIFS. Generate scans and indexes the content in these locations to make it searchable; it does not require moving documents out of your controlled environment.

How do administrators connect a storage location?

Administrators open Settings → Storage → Locations and use Add storage to run a two-step wizard: a Details step (storage name, optional description, and storage type) and a Connection step (credentials and paths for the chosen type). A Test connection must succeed before the location can be saved. Once a location shows a connected status, an indexing job can be started from the location’s menu. The storage type is fixed after creation; all other fields remain editable.

Can Generate connect to a NAS over SSH?

Yes. For NAS storage, Generate can connect over SSH — through a server, a local mount, or an SSH tunnel — in addition to standard NAS, NFS, and SMB-CIFS connections. This lets Generate reach network-attached storage that is not directly exposed.

How is indexed data scanned and preprocessed?

Each connected location supports a Scan action that launches an indexing job (available only when the location is connected) and a Preprocessing configuration that controls the pipeline applied to scanned files. Indexing and analytics views let administrators run scans and review storage insights.

Does Generate support backup and restore?

Yes. Generate provides backup and restore for indexed data, letting administrators protect content with snapshots and policies. Note that deleting a storage location removes it and the data indexed from it, and that action cannot be undone.
